Wheelchair Rugby

Wheelchair Rugby is a game that is specifically designed for tetraplegics (four limbs are affected by the disabilty). It is a cross between basketball, American football and ice hockey.

The game is played on a basketball court and four players from each team compete at any one time. The objective is to advance the ball up the court and to score a goal when the ball is carried over the goal line by one of the team members. The ball is able to be passed in any direction, but must be bounced or passed at least once every 10 seconds. The game allows full wheelchair contact between opposing team members.

Classification

The athletes are grouped within a point system ranging from 0.5 points (the most limited ability), to 5.0 points (the highest level of functional ability). Each team of four players must have no more than 8 points on the court at any one time.
