Lawn Bowls

Since 1984, Lawn Bowls has not been a Paralympic competition, but it is played at the Commonwealth Games. Furthermore, Lawn Bowls is recognised by the International Paralympic Committee as a sport available to people with disabilities. There are no variations to the standard competition rules of Bowls applied.

Classification

There are eight sections within the Lawn Bowls classification system and specific requirements are applied to the type of wheelchairs athletes can use.

  • B1: Athletes are totally blind
  • B2: Athletes are partially sighted with visual acuity of up to 2/60 &/or visual field of less than 5 degrees
  • B3: Athletes are partially sighted with visual acuity of above 2/60 up to 6/60 &/or visual field of more than 5 degrees and less than 20 degrees
  • B4: Severely disabled athletes unable to use a bowl larger than 64mm diameter (i.e. tetraplegics or cerebral palsy)
  • B5: Ambulant and wheelchair athletes with restricted upper grip and upper–body limb function, poor balance and coordination
  • B6: Ambulant and wheelchair athletes with reduced balance function
  • B7: Ambulant and wheelchair athletes with minor balance probems
  • B8: Ambulant and wheelchair athletes who have a permanent and irreversible disability, but with no noticible function impairment
