The Kelly Griffin Women's Wheelchair Basketball Challenge

WHAT

After it's creation in 2017, the Kelly Griffin Challenge is back for 2019! This event brings together those who have been playing the sport for years as well as those who have never played before!

Following feedback from previous years, there is a new format this year with the main training on the Friday evening prior to the challenge on the Saturday.

The challenge day itself will be a combination of light training, a 3x3 tournament (teams decided for you) and a 5x5 finale with a good amount of snack breaks in between! It will be concluded with a prize giving and an evening meal at the venue to allow plenty of time for chatting.

This initiative was designed to begin to offer women the same opportunities that their male counterparts receive. Following the Kelly Griffin Challenge we'll be continuing our training sessions and entering a women's team into multiple NZ competitions.

The event is named after Kelly Griffin, a beloved player who sadly passed away in the lead up to the 2017 event. Her family have donated a Kelly Griffin Spirit of the Game Award, which each year is awarded to someone who shares similar characteristics to Kelly in the form of determination, skill, humor, sportsmanship and support.

There is a $25.00 entrance fee for players. Please get in touch if you wish to discuss any payment options, we don’t want to see anyone miss out.

WHO

The event is for any female over 10 years old. We would love to see as many experienced players as possible as well as those new to the game, or those returning.

Many people don't realize that you don't have to be a wheelchair user in daily life to be eligible for wheelchair basketball, as long as you have some impairment in your legs or feet, and are able to self-propel a wheelchair, you can play!

Able-bodied but want to give it a go? No problem! The more the merrier!

If you have any questions regarding your eligibility to play, please don’t hesitate to get in touch!
