The Halberg Junior Disability Games

We think every child/youth with a physical disability should have the opportunity to take part in regular physical activity and sport. This is why we're launching a training programme in preparation for the Halberg Junior Disability Games (JDG) in our two most inclusive sports - Athletics and Swimming.

Don't worry - if athletics and swimming aren't for you we also have options available where you can represent Team Auckland in Boccia and Powerchair Football. Get in touch to find out more information.

This will be an 11-week programme with weekly sessions alternating between athletics and swimming and a couple of multi-sport sessions thrown in for good measure. They will be held at rotating venues across Auckland so everyone has some weeks that will be on their doorstep.

The sessions will be designed to give everyone, no matter what their ability, an insight into NZs top Para Sports, and develop the fundamental skills and physical literacy that will enable them to excel later in life.

With expert coaches, guest appearances from Paralympic athletes and a fun, friendly environment, we're hoping to develop life-long participation amongst our youth generation.

The programme will lead up to Halberg's Junior Disability Games - a national event where all regions come together to compete in a range of sports over the weekend of 6-8th October - giving everyone a chance to show off their new talents!

If there is interest, we would like to offer some parent/coach education sessions alongside the programme. These could cover: classification, pathways, competitions, making training more inclusive and activities that can be done at home. Those who are interested in coaching may also have the chance to access accredited coaching courses pending availability. Please highlight your interest in the registration form.

The programme is open to anyone between 8-21 years of age, male or female and caters for visual impairments and a wide range of physical disabilities.

With great coaches taking the sessions we will ensure that everyone is pushed to achieve their potential whether it is early days on your sporting journey or if you're already training and competing regularly.

To ensure we're offering quality coaching to all participants we ask that, if taking part in swimming, you can swim 25m without stopping. If you can't do this, let us know and we can link you with the Halberg activity fund to get you up to speed.

If you've got any questions regarding whether you can get involved then please get in touch :)
