Boccia
The aim of Boccia is to either throw, kick or bowl leather balls which are coloured blue or red, as close to the “jack” (a white target ball), as possible on a smooth indoor surface. The game is very similar to bowls or petanque where at the end of each round, or end, the referee measures the distance of the balls closest to the jack.
It can be played individually, in pairs or in a team of three. In all events, men and women compete equally.
Classification
Boccia is traditionally a sport played by people with a high level of cerebral palsy and now includes athletes with other related neurological conditions. There are four classes which are dependant on an athlete’s functional ability:
- BC1: Players with severe cerebral palsy who throw or kick the ball
- BC2: Players with cerebral palsy who throw the ball
- BC3: Players with cerebral palsy who cannot throw the ball
- BC4: Players who do not have cerebral palsy, but throw the ball
